MYRTLE BEACH…Karole Jensen, President of Wings for Children returned from the national, annual conference of the Air Care Alliance in Kansas City, Missouri held this weekend.
Wings for Children’s program “Angel Flight” was able to participate in this conference due to the on-going funding from the Senior Golf Tournament of Myrtle Beach.
Membership in the Air Care Alliance will allow even more flights to link with Angel Flight to carry children and others further.
Even though Angel Flight has transported some children more than 1,500 miles in one day for tests and treatment, there is now an organization in place to support more flights. Children have been transported to or from South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia, Ohio, Virginia, Missouri, and Washington, D. C. by Angel Flight.
Wings for Children is primarily a child abuse and neglect non-profit organization founded in 1978. As an extension of the work for these children, flights began over 5 years ago to transport children.
Almost three years ago, Angel Flight was born with the support of the Senior Golf Tournament.
Some flights are to transport abused, neglected or missing children. Others are compassion flights dealing with crisis in families. There are flights for medical evaluations and treatment.
Volunteer pilots use there airplanes, at their own expense. Angel Flight has also received requests to transport whole blood and organs.
The Air Care Alliance is a league of humanitarian flying organizations dedicated to public service nationwide. Using their own time and general aviation aircraft, pilot members help hundreds of people every month by providing air transportation and support for health care, disaster relief and environmental observation and monitoring and other humanitarian activities.
Air Care Alliance has 43 volunteer pilot organizations logging 45,000 people over the life of the member organizations with 28 million nautical miles flown through the member organizations since startup, with flight hours totaling 238,000.
Through tracking, July through December, 1998, the National Patient Air Transport Helpline Data base shows 34% were ambulatory traveling more than 900 miles; 30% were ambulatory and traveling less than 900 miles. 27% were non-ambulatory and needed air ambulance with 9% ambulatory but wheel chair dependent. 70% of the referrals came from the patient, family and friends, while 3% were referred by social workers or health care providers.
Of these diagnosis, 44% were cancer; 25% other life threatening illnesses; 24% with serious debilitating conditions; and 7% organ transplants. Of the referrals from the National Patient Air Transport Helpline, 18% were referred to volunteer pilot organizations through the Air Care Alliance.
“Heartfelt thanks goes to the Senior Golf Tournament for their support to allow us to help so many at such critical times in their lives.” said Karol Jensen, President of Wings for Children – Angel Flight.
